Despite her wide reprtoire of movie work, Laurie Holden is probably best known for her forays into sci-fi and cult TV - as Marita Covarrubias on The X Files, as Mary Travis on The Magnificent Seven, and in guest appearances on Highlander, Poltergeist: The Legacy, and The Outer Limits. As you will see below, however, her work is far broader than that.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

Laurie as Adele in The Majestic
"I researched from around 1926 to 1951, because 1926 is the year Adele was born. So I knew what was going on socially, economically and politically, what the music was, who my heroes were, who was her favourite movie star. I really got a sense of the war and the homefront. I watched documentaries and listened to tons of jazz, got together with some members of the cast and did some swing dancing, and watched about 50 old movies from the '20s up to 1951." -- Laurie Holden on preparing for her role of Adele Stanton in The Majestic, Atomic Retro, Fall/Winter 2001.

"[I'm] blessed to have been given the opportunity to be part of this beautiful story and to bring the role of 'Adele' to life. This is a heartfelt story - one that touched me on so many levels. One of the many themes that particularly grabbed me was that of loss: loss of identity, loss of ideals, and, in Adele's case, the loss of the love of one's life. I loved the 'what if' aspect of this story. What does one do? What course of action does one take if presented with something new, different, and unknown? Do you embrace it or turn away out of fear and uncertainty? Do you confine yourself to playing it safe, or or be bold and face the great unknown with courage and dignity? It's an interesting human exploration that is profoundly universal and true." -- Laurie Holden on The Majestic, The Majestic press kit. Thanks to John Pollono and Castle Rock Entertainment.

"Anna [Garduno, Frank Darabont's President of Production] would talk to us about Laurie's work in acting class. When we read Laurie the first time, she did very, very good work. We chose five of the toughest scenes to audition with. Laurie has confidence, and when you're acting opposite someone with the kind of energy and charisma that Jim [Carrey] has, if you can't hold your own in that environment, it's not going to work." -- The Majestic casting director Deborah Aquila, The Majestic press kit. Thanks to Joe Pollono and Castle Rock Entertainment.

"I was thrilled at presenting a fresh face like Laurie's to the moviegoing audience. She beat out a lot of people for this role, and I think she will capture a lot of hearts and, hopefully, acclaim for her work in this movie. She's got stunning chops as an actor, and miles of star charisma." -- The Majestic director Frank Darabont, The Majestic press kit. Thanks to Joe Pollono and Castle Rock Entertainment.

Laurie as Marita in The X Files, with Nicholas Lea as partner-in-crime Krycek
"If only next season could be the Alex and Marita show; these two lusty, conniving rogues would inject a jolt of electricity, mischieviousness and sly fun into an exhausted show that's been running on fumes for far too long." -- Paula Vitaris, Seventh Season Guide, Cinescape Magazine, October 2000. From her mouth to God's ears.

"She's very pretty, but no." -- Jim Carrey on romancing Laurie Holden, TIME, June 2001.

"Laurie Holden is like a classic movie star. She's smoky, dangerous, sexy, and has so much in reserve." -- David Duchovny on Laurie Holden, Cinescape Magazine, October 1999.

"I'm in full denial about Krycek...He's my partner in crime! He can't be dead!" -- Laurie Holden, Entertainment Weekly, June 29-July 6, 2001.

"Throughout the course of this mythology, you've seen this cold, calculated, emotionless, private woman, and in this two-parter, you see her vulnerable, exposed, bare, raw, beaten. It's shocking. I shrieked in glee when I saw the script." -- Laurie Holden on One Son, original source unknown.

"With the knowledge that the previous informants have been killed, I think that may be my fate in the future, unfortunately. But then again, as Marita would say, not everything dies." -- Laurie Holden on Marita Covarrubias, Inside The X Files special.

"The biggest surprise in the two-parter is the return of Marita. This time Laurie Holden gets a chance to act. She is heart-breaking as the wretched woman who has become one of the Syndicate's guinea-pigs. Unfortunately...once she has served her function, she disappears." -- Paula Vitaris on One Son, Sixth Season Guide, Cinescape Magazine, October 1999.

"That was not a passionate moment for Marita. It was what she needed to do in order to carry out her mission." -- Laurie on kissing Krycek in Patient X, Cinescape Magazine, October 1999.

"What I like most about my character is that she's so cool and evasive and that she's such an enigma you can't define her." -- Laurie Holden on Marita, The X Files Yearbook 1999.

"It was exciting because we knew that it was the first love scene on The X Files, so it was just kind of like a part of X Files history we knew we were creating. Nick as I are friends so we had a real sense of humour about it...every time our lips touched we were actually knocking teeth, so every time we came together it was like two quarterbacks coming together, 'Wham!' It actually appears a lot more passionate than it really was." -- Laurie Holden on kissing Krycek, The X Files Yearbook 1999.

"I'm ready to break out and be a goofball." -- Laurie Holden on pursuing comedy, The X Files Yearbook 1999.
