SPOTLIGHT ON THE MAJESTIC
|
The Majestic is a tale of love and rebirth set in the world of McCarthyist Hollywood in the 1950s. Laurie Holden co-stars with Jim Carrey and Martin Landau as Adele Stanton, love interest to Carrey's Peter Appleton. Script writer and suspected Communist Appleton, amnesiac after a car wreck, is mistaken for small-town soldier Luke Trimble and falls in love with Luke's fiancee (Adele). After restoring a local movie house he is hauled before a Senate committee.
This $68 million dollar film is the latest blockbuster from Frank Darabont and was tipped as a serious Oscar contender, but suffered from poor marketing decisions including bad timing and the overt solicitation of Oscar votes. It is Laurie's first high-profile movie role and saw her mentioned in Entertainment Tonight, EW, and TIME. It was filmed in locations throughout California, particularly the town of Ferndale, and released in the US on December 21, 2001. It is available on video and DVD.
